MLC SPECIAL PROGRAMS
This is only possible with MLC!
CREATIVE MOVEMENT
Children learn joyfully through movement. Creative Movement supports the development of physical skills, problem solving, social skills, manipulative and perceptual abilities and an aesthetic sensibility.
The full-time movement specialist directs the classes through the use of stories, games, and dance. Classroom topics can be explored in the movement class as well. For example, if a classroom is studying the ocean, the curriculum comes alive with a movement class about sea creatures. The children attend Creative Movement twice a week.

STORYTELLING
The storytelling program at MLC is designed to augment the classroom language arts activities. The program uses folktales from around the world as well as original stories and music as the basis for a wide range of literacy building experiences.
Listening skills, predicting and sequencing abilities are developed as the children participate in the stories that are shared. These stories become richer as the children act them out, giving them an understanding of story structure from the inside out. The students’ storytelling skills are enhanced when they add onto stories, create group stories and narrate their own stories for their classmates to act.
Incorporating rhythm, rhyme, humor and repetition, Storytelling engages the children and makes them an integral part of the story and the surrounding activities. The children attend Storytelling once a week.

MUSIC
The Music Program at MLC is designed to teach the children the language of music through singing songs—both with and without words—chanting poems and rhythms, moving to music, listening to live and recorded music, exploring instruments and sounds and acting out stories associated with pieces or songs. The children intuitively learn to understand, and sing in, a variety of keys, tonalities and meters.
The program fosters a love of music, and, with gentle guidance from the teacher, children are encouraged to take more and more musical risks as they experience successes.
Music at MLC gives children the ear training required for participation in music throughout their lives. With growing aural mastery of the language of music comes the preparedness for reading, playing instruments and writing music as the children continue their education in ongoing schools. Children attend Music twice a week.
